Every Asian has heard this lecture at least once in their lifetime. Oh yes, the dreadful Rice Field Lecture. Your parents usually tell it to you on your first day of school or your very first job interview, in any case it always starts and ends the same.

“When I was a child working in the rice fields …blah… which is why I want you to do better and make a better life for yourself.”

I heard in on my first day of kindergarten, when I got enrolled in ESL (English second language), heck they probably even recited it the day I was born!

Amen, Tiffany. Who here has also heard the dreadful Rice Paddy Lecture?

Though im white and not asian I do have to listen to this from my fiance. She is from a small town in South Vietnam. One thing I do find is that she appreciates what she has now.

There were no rice fields where my mother grew up (Crenshaw), but fortunately for her, the restaurant my grandfather owned fills that gap.

Me: “Why do I have to take out the trash?”
Her: “Hey, I was peeling shrimp at age three in the restaurant, because we all had to contribute, and if I ever complained, boy did pop let me have it…”

    Me: “It’s cold in here.”
Her: “I was chopping vegetables at age six, and after pop yelled at you for something, he’d remember something else you did, and he’d start yelling at you for that…”
