Here’s is what Tiffany has to say regarding Asian Celebrities:

“You can take the Asian out of Asia but you can’t take the Asia out of the Asian… ok that doesn’t work but it sort of paints you a picture.”

Sometimes when you’re with your parents, aunts, uncles (and if you’re like me being forced to go eat dim sum with them– well you get stuck in pretty boring conversations). Half of the time, you have no clue what they’re talking about so you just stay quiet and eat something dubious.

While eating dim sum, someone might try starting a conversation. Whatever it is about, they always end up talking about movies or celebrities. That’s perfectly normal, except they’re not talking about Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt, they’re rambling about some people whose names all sound the same!

If you ask: “So… did anyone watch The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button?”

Thats when the crickets start to come out.

“What?” they ask.
“You know… that movie with Brad Pitt?”

They stare at you blankly

“Cate Blanchett?”

The stares continue

“It won like 3 Oscars!”

They continue to stare at you blankly, soon they just ignore you and start talking about there asian stuff. Then three months later they’ll say:

“Chris… what’s his last name? Beat up that singer girl.. what’s her name? Rionna? Rianna?”

It’s Rihanna.

I don’t understand the point of this article. Is it that delicious dim sum is bad, or that white american celebrities are better than asian celebrities because their names do not all “sound the same.”

Maybe someday when asian celebrities in america are not cast as a mockery of our culture, girls like Tiffany might grow up and not hate her own heritage.

If only Asian-American celebrities were given more exposure in the media, Tiffany would have role models to look up to.

I think this would apply to a lot of people in our parent’s generation and above, whether or not they are asian. They have no idea who these hollywood celebrities are and their movies. They may recognize big stars like Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts and may have seen a film or two but they are not “fans”. I don’t really see the point of ths article either. It is neither funny or insightful. The title of this article was “Asian Celebrities”, which led me to believe it was going to be about you know, asian celebrities.
