#97 Model Poses

Posted October 22nd, 2008 by kvietgrl · 38 Comments

Asians can’t help being so good looking. Seriously, sometimes we just have too huge of an advantage.

A truly wise man from San Francisco once said: seems that the Asian women I have met usually send me pictures that are 10 years old, or photoshoped with alterations. Worse are the professional studio pictures with corny backgrounds and lighting that many Chinese women seem to have. They never look like the picture, not even close. To top it off, while many show up looking like they just got in a street fight (beat up looking) others show up just looking very average but think they are so hot! I think many Asian women, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, and especially the Filipina women get this false sense of their own attractiveness because every dorky white guy in Silicon Valley with an Asian fetish have only one criteria: 1. that the woman’s eyes are slanted. I think preference number 2 would be that she can’t really understand him, so he can hide what a freaking retard he really is. The end result is that these Asian women are adored by these social misfits and get a puffy head. – Jake,

Ladies, he’s single. most Asians dream about becoming successful doctors, lawyers, or engineers, others are way off the beaten path. Some Asians even have secret aspirations about being the next import model or Asian drama star (not really, but this post lets you in on a crucial reasoning from post #66 – why Asian people like taking pictures). Why does the average asian invest so much money on the next Nikon, Canon, cutting edge cellphone, digital camera, or webcam? It’s not only because Asians like taking family photos, doing peace signs in groups, and then retaking each photo twice (in case they thought the photo just wasn’t right).

No, the standard “Asian Peace Sign” pose is really a V for Victory, and our slanted eyes aren’t only due to our need to mentally assault the sketchy person in the corner of the room who needs a cure for Yellow Fever. No, Asians just really like posing.
Does Mr. Single in San Francisco have a point? Not really. Take a glance at any photo of any non-Asian “candid” on MySpace, and you’ll notice a missing arm. (Hmm. I wonder why…) If you take a look at the person’s camera, you’ll find several hundred copies of the same practiced pose.
The Asian fascination with Cameras and Photography spans centuries. During my lifetime, I’ve witnessed the Camera craze in the 90s, Asian teenagers taking those blurry, washed out, size, group or individual studio photos for $14.99 in the malls (My friends dragged me into a couple). Then there were Purikura photo booths (See post #2, I’ve taken plenty of these).

As cellphones became more easily accessible, some misguided Asians started taking those bug eyed cellphone poses from every angle you can think of (Yes, who hasn’t taken photos of themselves when no one was looking). Also, I noticed that more of my Asian friends who are girls would bring back from Asia studio photos of them doing model poses and post them on Facebook or Myspace. Thus, they’ve inspired me to write about the Asian person’s secret pasttime, which is to do model poses for the camera.

I mean, really, why take a “standard” decapitated MySpace photo, when you could have an amazing Asian pose? Perhaps our tendency to do well in class has let us realize this sooner.

I think it’s because Asians are vain. Why else are they so materialistic? I think programs like PhotoShop and the like are building bigger egos than we ever could have imagined.

I absolutely despise the poses, any and all of them, especially the ones taken in front of a bathroom mirror, whether it is their own bathrooms, or even a public restroom. And the ever-present pouts make them look whiny. I’m starting to think I’m getting a little whiny here, too.

I am Asian, by the way.

I do pose in alot of pictures but I will never ever ever do the V sign.

  • 3 RyanFriday // Oct 23, 2008 at 2:31 am

Man you thought of doing this one before me hahah. This is incredibly and ridiculously true al la myspace/facebook. I especially find that one series of pictures you have above of the girl doing different poses in front of her webcam it looks like…that’s just so damn funny because for me it’s annoying. Also I am quite antipathetic about the one handed photos even more so. Especially the ones of people looking away from the camera. Go emo!

    great job

Actually, my friends and I abhor having our pictures taken….

“Asians can’t help being so good looking.”

I think it’s just the girls… that’s what draws in the white guys (darn, I brought it up AGAIN). Anywhoo, is there a model pose for Asian guys? I hope not… I’m not much of a photo-taker/poser anyways…

  • 6 Krista // Oct 28, 2008 at 7:00 pm

Wow, someone is very racist. You clearly view Asians as the superior race.
With Asians, it’s either hit or miss- they are either hot or ugly. And obvious that Asians are not born with an innate ability to take good pictures, they have to practice shit too.

  • 7 Shaun // Oct 28, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Krista – the writer is clearly being sarcastic in saying that Asians “can’t help being so good looking”. Tongue is firmly planted in cheek, and it’s a shame you missed the idea of the piece.

I reckon your assertion that “With Asians, it’s either hit or miss- they are either hot or ugly” is even worse. That’s certainly not what the writer was intending, and if that’s your view, that’s a massive generalization.

That’s so true about Asians and cameras. Funny thing is I’m an Asian photographer! That’s like taking it to the n’th degree! When I photograph weddings, I always find that the Asian ones have the most “uncle bob” photographers who think they’re pros! HA!

  • 9 Darrick Jane // Dec 12, 2008 at 4:20 am

The Asian fascination with Cameras and Photography spans centuries.

Ha! How stupid is this comment? Yes, the camera was invented 5000 years ago!…..NOT!

  • 10 Lisa // Dec 17, 2008 at 5:29 am

Wow, one of the responses sounds a bit defensive – haha, obviously guilty of posing!

I loved your post – in fact have 2 girlfriends guilty of the repeated pose! And I have to admit, a few of my Facebook profile shots are missing an arm…

Sometimes you just have to laugh…

it is kinda true im filipina and i pose alot in pictures

but besides the fact dont you think every race does it? all my spanish and white friends pose in pictures they take pictures of themselves they all have webcameras i think its an everybody kind of thing

  • 13 Scarlett // Feb 19, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Kyla I agree with you. Nowadays everyone has a phone/camera, so we all take photos of ourselves, myself included. Except I never do the pouts. NEVER.
I find those pics of teenage girls crowding around a camera, pouting their lips till they look like a school of fish, and widening their eyes till their eyeballs are about to fall out disgusting. But that’s just me. How does pouting have anything to do with sexiness?

  • 14 Anonymous // Feb 22, 2009 at 2:08 pm

Mr. San Francisco is really . . . I’m not going to say it. But what I will say is this: maybe all those asian women he met are just stuck up idiots, but he shouldn’t judge all asian women like them.

Ever heard of Honey Lee? She is way prettier than your popular high school caucasian darling.

And what is wrong with Asian people wanting to become the next model or investing money on cameras (to take pictures of themselves)?
Do you guys actually think the world is not going to change, and revolve continuously around long legged caucasians only? Yes, Douzten Kroes and Adriana Lima and the rest of the models are gorgeous, but they won’t be young forever.

Anyway, is it not normal to take pictures of yourself making funny or pouty faces and post them on myspace? It’s fun, and A LOT of people do it (regardless of their race). So why complain about Asian people doing it? All my caucasian and African American friends do it.

Maybe all I said above is wrong to you, or doesn’t follow your opinions.

Well you know what, I don’t give a hell. This is my opinion, so respect it.

  • 15 KL // Mar 30, 2009 at 7:44 pm

who cares!!! LOL….man, i take a ton of photos and i do model poses hell yea cause you know what?! i know i look good and the hell, you look at me cause you know i look good too! I’m your entertainment honey! whether it’s a cell phone photo…if i look good in it, heck yea it’s going on my facebook/myspace/everywhere.
call me conceitied or vain…. i look good whether i’m in photos or not! ha!
i have no prob. if someone not so attractive looks waaay too good in their photos, totally better than their real selves, who gives a dxmn you jealous freak who has nothing better to do but to sit behind a friggin’ computer screen and write a whole entire page of useless crap!!! LOL..
ya know what? you’ve inspired a whole generation to go buy nikon cams. and pose like models now!!!
i don’t get why ppl are bashing out on ppl who just loves taking pix. ain’t nothing wrong with it unless if your photos just don’t ever turn out as good. maybe you’re ugly and your cam. says so too. =(

Anonymous, ever heard of Claudia Schiffer? She makes Honey Lee look like a drowned rat. We could do this all day, it’s not about race.

Girls posing awkwardly in internet photos. Welcome to the net, enjoy your stay. Be warned that 99% of people online do NOT look like their photoshopped pictures on myspace and facebook. That’s my friendly advice.

I’m the girl in the “imposter asian” section… well i’ll have you know that I AM ASIAN. ASIANS CAN BE BLONDE. also, where’d you get that picture? Can you send me a copy? HIGH RES THX

  • 19 Dot // Aug 4, 2009 at 4:02 am

Reason why people like to make a pout face in the pictures is coz they want to look CUTE like sad puppies or something, you get what I mean? with the big eyes and the puffy face…
Anyways, I think many people like taking pictures not to say really that Asian especially do. But Perhaps they do take it more than other race. It’s what they like to invest their money on. Expensive cams that most other race wouldn’t invest on. And guess which Country the most popular brands of camera are made from? I mean, really. A picture is worth a thousand words. It’s Art, and could be beauty. What’s wrong with wanting to capture a still moment of beauty when life pass you by so quickly all the time?
With pictures, at least after retirement, you’ll have something to do. Sort out a whole lifetime of pictures you took. And make it all nice so you can pass it on your nxt generation. :] Who cares what the new generations of kids like to pose like, naked for all I care. Let’s just worry about self instead :] It’s not like their picture taking is harmful to us?

Umm, assuming that you are a White b—-, Asian women can be hot, average, or ugly like any “race” of human being…oh wait, except for White women, most of them are ugly or average but think that they are hot. LOL…so true.

  • 26 moon123 // Mar 14, 2010 at 6:23 pm

Umm Claudia Shifffer looks like a transvestite. I’m sorry that you feel that as a White person, you must always TRY to prove ur superiority.

  • 27 David // Apr 29, 2010 at 9:35 am

I see so many V signs in pictures and it seems more female doing so than male. I thought the V comes across as “Love” instead of peace or victory. Oh well…

If she had been made of iron, the accident might have triggered this kind of a tear that she might have stuffed with drinking water within a handful of minutes and sunk. But she was made from HSLA construction steel plate. The Rotomahana was the very first steel ocean-going steamer to undergo a major incident, and by her risky expertise the immense superiority of steel more than iron was demonstrated. By that time on, all vessels were developed of steel.

Honey Lee is obviously a very attractive woman. Honey Lee has also had extensive reconstructive surgery including a nose job, double eyelid surgery, a forehead implant, lip injections, and possibly cheek and chin implants, too. Not exactly what I’d call a natural beauty. And why did she have all these procedures done? So that her features look more Caucasian-beautiful, like the lovely Claudia Schiffer mentioned below. But even with all the amazing and tasteful plastic surgery, with no makeup on her face, Honey Lee looks like your typical14-year-old Korean boy – Claudia Schiffer is twice her age and looks better than that sans makeup!

Those are the fobs and the self obsessed. I’m Asian and I have never bothered with photos of myself. I would especially never be caught doing one of those embarrassing poses. LOL. Those silly children.
