#17 Asian Supermarkets

As we have heard before, Asians love bargains, and will do anything to get cheap stuff. Hence, the necessity for Asian Supermarkets. Why buy a pound of tomatoes at Albertsons for $2.49 when you can get the same fresh tomatoes at 99 Ranch Supermarket for about buck? On top of low prices, Asian Supermarkets are the only places where you can find Instant Noodles (non asian ones), either extra spicy in a bowl, or a bag. You can also buy it in bulk.

Asian supermarkets are the go to place for everything we need to prepare meals. Because face it, Asians don’t always eat white food. We can’t have Hamburgers everyday, Think of the consequences! That is also why most asians aren’t part of the obese or overweight population. And yes, asians technically do have rice everyday. Sometimes we have noodles that are rice based. Sometimes we have spring rolls made of rice paper. So next time when someone says “Haha, Asians eat rice everyday” Go ahead and nod. Asians are proud of it. But don’t be fooled: Asians still enjoy an occasional shopping spree through American supermarkets. Where else can asians use coupons? (again with being thrifty) Asians have to have their hot pockets.

Asian supermarkets are also known to carry many other items that aren’t available in an American Supermarket, such as a bag of 500 disposable chopsticks, 25 lb. bag of rice, Hoisin Sauce, Fresh Udon, Durian, Canned Lychees and Logans, Frozen Jackfruit, Spring Roll Paper, Chinese Sausage, Authentic Frozen Dumplings, Canned Coconut Milk, and the list goes on! Not to mention traditional Asian produce, in the produce section. Because face the facts, Who else eats Bok Choy? Pork Loins? Raw Fish? Dried Squid? Egg Plants? Dragonfruit? Balut? Only Asians do. Shittake Mushrooms? Yeah, asians eat those too. And where else can asians buy that kind of stuff at a cheap and reasonable price? Stater Brothers? Ha! Have fun trying to find it next to all the T.V. Dinners and frozen pizza. Here are some sample ads from 99 Ranch, one of the leading chains in the Asian Supermarket industry. http://www.99ranch.com/NewsAdsSoCal.asp

Asians don’t clip coupons, because that’s something poor people do. They look for deals that are already marked down.

@ Deb , those are the rich americanized asians,

I was in line at Ralphs one time ( double coupons ) This middle aged asian lady dumped a truckload of coupons to buy 2 boxes of hot pockets.

    It is, true.

Asian people like asian market and Hispanics like hispanic market. It is mainly for ethnic food choices. I tell you for the smaller asian markets such as in smaller cities sell things are much higher price than the supermarkets. We still have to shop there becuase they are the only ones to carry things we want.

Last time I checked, all people like bargains. I have to admit that more asians or more intelligent people seem to be able to find those bargains. Oh, you might want to add Costco in your list. I see a lot of asian people there as well.

haha. so true. its also another reason why we’d probably not do the atkins diet — most of our foods are carbs…

Asians get fat but don’t show it, because it’s that unhealthy thick fat. It’s not because of the rice eating, but because of all the greasy and fried food. Duh.

The one /health/ thing we have going for us is that we eat a lot of vegetables, and they’re cheaper at the Asian markets, especially the markets that aren’t Chinese, Korean or Japanese.

We Canadians go to T&T…I’m sooooo glad Asian supermarkets are like mainstream ones now. No more stinky stores!

  • 11 Justin // Mar 11, 2008 at 11:12 am

Some are still hella stinky…wow, never heard of T&T

Good God man, thank the Buddha who created Asian supermarkets because some brilliant Asian dude (you know it had to be the dude because you know how Asians like to over-idolize the role of the “manly man”) decided that there just HAD TO BE a place where we can rename what looks like Napa Cabbage as “CHINESE” cabbage because – hey, Chinese people need their cabbage, too. And where else can I buy my favorite Korean drama, a Hello Kitty key chain, AND argue for five minutes with the guy in the fish market over the price per lb for those shrimp?! GENIUS, I tell you. It’s pure genius.

Not to mention that you always here Asian pop music set to techno beats while shopping through the aisles. Nothing beats seeing your Asian grandmother squeezing pomegranates in her hand to test for freshness to the “upmsss upmsss upmsss” beat of H.O.T. “Candy” or my favorite Brown Eyes “Bbul Ssul Ill Nyun”.

It brings a tear to my eye every single time.

T&T is awesome! It has everything, but a little more pricey. But it’s a lot cleaner and organized. They even have takeout food and dim sum! They are so busy, even at night. One store extended the hours to midnight.

I love Asian Markets – food is great (Rothi! Udon!), cheap (Thai chillies for 1,99/lbs!!) and I’m usually the only white person in the store.

Ok I have to confess – i have Thai wife

it really annoys me when i tell people that i’m making rice because they always ask me what do i mix with it. i probably don’t understand the question but to my understanding i think by now non-asians would be realize that we asians are just content to have our rice plain and not fried or mixed with some other crap.

    I love your website!D

There’s nothing wrong with eating rice everyday, we don’t treat it like a side dish, and its not an exotic food. Its the main dish, which white people don’t get. Also their NORMAL meals takes ages to cook, whereas a simple chop chop rice and veggie stir fry will do the trick for us.

Growing up in the Philadelphia area, my family shops at Chinatown, H-Mart, and South Philly’s Wing Phat Plaza. During my vacation to CA this summer, we shopped at 99 ranch in the Rosemead area.
