Asian kids are always pressured to do well in School. This means not only doing better than their Asian peers, but kids twice their age. All asian kids will do one of the following: 1) Play an instrument: Be it piano, guitar, or violin (strongly preferred). 2) Study math at an accelerated rate: Asian kids are supposed to take Calculus as middle schoolers. It’s their right! 3) Participate in extracurricular activities:I heard that Jamar was president of Key Club, Student Alliance, Future Doctors of America! You lead a club and you too will make me proud!

parentsThings like this obviously leave no time for asian kids to be normal. There is little time for sleep, let alone hang out. “Dating isn’t mentioned in the Asian household, and girls only come up as a topic of discussion if they’re horrifically smart and if your parents want to compare you to them. If dating is allowed, of course, the girlfriend must be Asian and must be smart.” -Bitter Asian Men

When all is said and done, however, Asian kids do succeed. They become dentists, pharmacists, doctors. Most importantly, all those inherited traits are paid back to their parents in the form of a nice home and high salary that they can brag about to their salon friends. Asians never put their parents into nursing homes due to the fact that they inherit all their brains from their parents and grandparents. To simply state it: They love their parents a lot. Why wouldn’t they? If you wish you could do the Asian thing, click here.

man, this one makes me feel guilty since I went to college majoring in dance and art. I hated school. Now I teach dance and I’ve worked in the animation field . I love what I do, and I’m proud of the kids now who are really into dancing, crew, hip hop the rest. We really can dance!!!!!

    5) Because Asian people without a college degree have shitty jobs, like a waiter at a Chinese restaurant in a tiny town, and you don’t see Asians doing the well-paid less-thinking jobs like construction.

hahaa :) , this is almost exactly what I’d say if i was to write it. Except for part of point (3) though. Most Asian parents I know would rather their kids spend all their time on Maths than participating in activities like sports, dancing, singing, plays, outdoors, etc.
So maybe that should be split into 2 sub-categories. Academic-related clubs (such as the ones you mentioned) are ok. But not “fun” clubs.

  • 7 YASPY Chick // Mar 12, 2008 at 7:49 am

Academic related clubs only? OMG. Band was THE club of choice for all the foreign Asian students at my high school (followed by badminton and choir).

I always hated those extracurricular math classes. Maybe Kumon is the reason I ended up getting two liberal arts degrees instead of anything useful, lol.

lol that made me laugh, but i’ve heard it way more than once from some of my friends. I think asian parents’ focus on education and all is great, but sometimes they compare their kids a little too much maybe? ;)

hahaah I was in Maine with my mom and we saw a Kumon commerical and she got so excited that they have juku schools in America.
She threatened to send me to one, but luckily there isn’t one close by to where we actually live.

not to sound like a debbie downer, but have you read that asian american women have the highest suicide rates in our nation, due to academic pressures and our standards to succeed plus the non emotional lack of approval from certain families. man , I don’t know about you all, but I think we should examine the over achievement issue with some caution.

  • 12 jungeun // Apr 5, 2009 at 7:53 pm

wow i just fit into all three of those rules

  • 13 Lisa // Jun 23, 2009 at 5:50 pm

this is debbie downer. we are in a severe recession, double dig unemployment, millions losing homes, and you have these imbeciles studying and studying for what!?!?!? there are NO jobs. stop studying and get some social skills, stop going to UCLA and get some social skillls. stop studying and get a hobby (math does not count) stop studying and learn how to have fun. enough of the academic BS, this is a different world now. all the studying in the world means nothing…it is all based on who you know and who you blow.

  • 14 Dear Lisa ^ // Aug 7, 2009 at 5:15 pm

Hi, I love your post. It really shows the amount of intelligence and common sense you have. F.Y.I there are jobs. And the jobs that Asians strive for aren’t necessarily prone to be affected by a recession i.e. Doctors, Dentists, Pharmacists. Asians do have social skills, and judging from your post, you don’t so instead of ranting about how Asians need to get a life, why were you reading this in the first place?? And you’re right about one thing, it IS a different world, a world in need of more scientists and intellects. It’s people like you who need to get a reality check.

  • 15 stephanieee // Aug 14, 2009 at 1:59 pm

well duh if we don’t get good jobs well earn crappy jobs , && we’ll LOSE OR ASIAN PRIDE !

  • 16 Barron // Aug 23, 2009 at 5:51 pm

“doctors” “dentists” and “pharmacists” are being laid off and taking 20% pay cuts. there is a SEVERE recession and we’re heading into a depression into 2010. we do need more asian “scientists” b/c who else will work for pennies as a post-doc/”fellow” in some white master slave in the laboratory? how does 33K/yr sound? Lisa is right, there very few if any jobs, now what???–more studying???? that is an archiac logic imbedded by the oriental philosophies back in the 50-60s. The USA is a titanic, and we are sinking fast…….all aboard!! and UCLA does not care either, asian, mongoloid, oriental, caucasoid, negroid, mexican, indian—we are headed into a DEEP DEPRESSION in 2010. change you can believe in—–a change in employment status.

Asians are the bomb in academics. The top is school in my state NSW has like a 98% assian population in which 90% of that chinese (go chinese students). Also, calculus during middle school. I hear those in China do calculus in the PRIMARY school years. Hell, my mum made me study calculus (for yr 10) out of a yr 4 chinese tex book.

The US may allow in nearly 5,000 more Indian doctors for residency training every year, an American doctors’ body said here on Saturday.

Vinod K. Shah, president of the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI), said he met US President Barack Obama and appealed to him to remove the present cap of 18,000 on residency training for US and foreign doctors.

“The case is now with a special committee and most likely to get a nod. The administration is planning to allow a total of 15,000 more doctors to do residency training in the US,” he added.

With all these acts of forcing children to take their academic successes more seriously than their social life (heck, their very biological lives even!), so why is it that when the young generation give their careers the focus they were expected to give to previous academic studies, parents complained they were lonely and want their son/daughters to pause working and come home to spend time with them?

  • 22 Yuffi // Oct 13, 2011 at 3:39 pm

Oh gee this is so true it’s not even funny. My Chinese friend and I (I’m Asian as well) just today were comparing answers to our algebra homework and we pretty much had the same thing for every question.

And I’m always embarrassed when I get anything lower than an A-
