Tears
We were walking across the road, talking animatedly. The street was quiet and peaceful and that was when it happened.
It was at the end of a college day, the day, sunny and hot.
My boyfriend Emmett and I were walking home. My siblings had already left college earlier. Emmett could of left with them but he chose to stay in college and wait for me to finish my last class. He should have left with the others. He should have! If he did, then this wouldn’t have happened!
It happened so fast. One minute we were walking across the road, then I saw the shocked look on Emmett’s face. The next minute I was in the air then flat on the ground. I looked up, the next thing I saw froze me. Next minute I heard a piercing scream and I realized it was coming from me. Pain rushed through every blood vessels in my body as I ran to my boyfriend lying stone still on the ground in the middle of the road. Blood… A lot of blood flowed and his once white shirt was now crimson red, wet from the blood.
I stared after the disappearing car that hit my boyfriend. I stared in disbelief. Shocked that those people could just run away after running someone over, not caring if they were ok or what.
I quickly, but shakingly dialed the emergency call number for an ambulance.
“Emmett… Why? It was meant to be me who gets hit? Why did you do that?” I cried, my heart tearing apart. Every tear shed part of my pain.
“I love you, Raye. I can’t bear it, if I lost you. I much rather sacrifice my own life and give you the chance to continue living your life.” Emmett replied, cutting off with pain.
“No… No, don’t leave me. You can’t do this to me! What am I going to do without you? There will be no point in me living without you, Emmett. You are the most important person in my life.”
“Baby, you have your family, Jasper, Alice, Edward, Carlisle and Esme, your parents and Edward’s girlfriend Bella. They will all be with you. They all love you too, you know… Ugh…” Emmett breaks off in pain.
“Emmett… Shh… Save your breath, so you can save your strength.” I hugged his hand tightly to my heart, anxious that the ambulance will get here in time. I was unwilling to let him go and leave me. No way am I going to let fate take him away.
“Whatever happens, Raye, I will always be with you forever, I will always be there to be your angel, protecting you.” Emmett grunts with deeper pain that seems to be a mixture of pain from his heart of leaving and the pain he’s suffering from the injuries.
“Shh… save your breath. Nothing is going to happen. You will be fine.” I tried to reassure him, but my voice was not as calm as I wanted it to be. I was worried and scared that I may not be able to keep to my promise I just made.
I heard the screech of the ambulance’s siren. I laid my hand softly on Emmett’s bruised face and reassured him again. “Don’t worry, the ambulance is coming. You’ll be fine.”
Emmett takes my hand from his face and held my hand in his hands. But I felt I was already losing him, his grip on my hand was weakening. I can see that he was fighting death itself and to see the pain in his eyes hurt me. Fresh tears continued to pour out my already swollen, red eyes.
“Emmett, I love you forever…” I said in a quiet voice.
“I love you too.” Emmett replied weakly, starting to lose consciousness.
The ambulance stopped a few feet away from us. Paramedics ran out of the ambulance, carrying a stretcher with them. Before they shifted Emmett onto the stretcher, they put a neck brace onto his neck to keep his spine still. After they had done that, they rushed into the open ambulance. I rushed along with them.
When we got into the ambulance, we watched the paramedics strap Emmett’s arm to check his blood pressure and heart rate. Then they gave him an oxygen mask and finally they had given him IV to keep his blood pressure high.
Before he was lost to unconsciousness, I whispered to his ear “I love you and I will avenge you. I love you.”
I held his hand the whole journey to the hospital. I did not leave his side at all. As I held his hand, I still felt him gripping my hand back, even though he was unconscious.
We reached the hospital in about 5 minutes, 10 minutes at the most. When Emmett disappeared into the operating theatre in the A & E, I went to the payphone and called home.
Japer picked up “Hello?”
“Jasper…” I break down crying.
“Raye? Where are you? What happened?” Jasper’s voice was worried.
“Jasper… Jasper… I’m the one that is meant to be lying in the operating theatre being operated on, not Emmett. It’s my fault. If I told him to have gone home with you lot, then this wouldn’t have happened.”
“I’m confused. First of all, where are you? Secondly, what exactly has happened? And tell me in a slow, calm way.”
“I’m in the hospital, waiting for the operation to finish…” and I told him the full story of what had happened.
“Ok. Listen to me. Wait there for me, in the hospital. I will now go to the others and tell them what had happened and we will get there as fast as we can. Ok?” Jasper instructed me.
“Yes, I will wait here for you.” I answered, so quiet that it was nearly a whisper.
“And remember to stay calm and BREATHE!” And the phone call was finished as Jasper had hung up. And all went silent…
