Greed
If I asked you the question, what is “Greed” mean to you? What is the first thing that comes into your mind?
Let me guess in points
either
- Money
- Selfishness
- Material, e.g cars, food, etc
There are loads of things that people can be or are greedy of. I cannot be completely sure but i would say the majority of people would answer “Money” to that question. As it is natural in human nature to be greedy for money. It’s a necessity, just like food is to us. A lot of us who’s used to be able to get money whenever we want to take it for granted but can have the nerve to be greedy for more. I’m not saying that everyone is like that, i’m just generalising.
I always say to my friends, dont ever be greedy for more money. Having enough is good enough and we should be grateful that we have money at all. And i tell them that money doesn’t create joy and happiness. Yes, it does create momentary happiness for it gets you the things you want. But even if you have all the money in the world, will you necessarily be completely happy? Maybe, maybe not. But let’s say, you have all the money but you dont have love, well maybe you have love with someone, but that someone acts to love you because they are greedy for your money, but you can’t do nothing about it because you love that person truly at heart? Would you really be truly happy? And yes i know i kind of side tracked a bit off subject. Well it is linked to some point anyway. On the other hand, for argument’s sake, you have just enough money to look after yourself and family and have enough to go overboard to buy things you want extra, but you have a family who you truly love and they truly love you back, how would you feel then? Better?
Anyway getting back to topic before i continue writing more scenarios for you to think about, people can do a lot of things due to greed. Normally, when it comes to greed, it means bad things. There are so many things that people will do just for the sake of greed, such as:
- if it is greed for money, they might rob a bank. or steal money from people.
- if it is greed for materials, for example, cars, they might steal a car.
- They could buy more than they actually need.
- Refuse to throw out stuff that is not necessarily anymore
- etc
There are so many ways people will do. And i think you could probably think of a lot of other things that people do. Everyone has gone through being greedy for things. I’m a victim of that, probably you too. Everyone has. We are all guilty of that.
You can see people are greedy already if they put a lot of food in their plates for their lunch/dinner, but don’t actually finish it and waste a lot of it. I always think, just take enough for you to eat, don’t let your eyes be too big for your stomach. Because everytime i see food wasted, i think of the people who are starving in the streets, whom don’t even have money to feed themselves let alone their children. And i think the amount of food we waste and take for granted, these people don’t even get the decent, clean food we get and how much they crave for a bit of our food that we eat day to day. That’s why i try my best to not waste food. i always go for getting not enough food for myself first round, so i know how much more i can eat and not take too much and waste it.
You have probably or might have experienced the greed for money, haven’t you? So you probably know what it feels like. Some people do extreme things to get money. Some will ruin their family, just to get more money, or they will rob their parents’ will or something. People steal. People lie to others and say they are going to just “borrow” some money from you but not pay you back. I, myself, hate that experience. I had a friend once, right, he just lost his wallet and phone, so he asked me if i could lend him some money and a phone. So i did, i lent him USD$35 and my spare Sony Ericsson W580i to him. Couple of months later i ask him for my money and phone back as i needed money to buy my Mum a present for Christmas and i wanted my phone back, then he tells me that he doesn’t have money at the moment to pay me back and that his Mum confiscated the phone. So i was like, fine and got money by going out to work at my Aunt’s chinese take away shop. Another couple of months later, i ask for both back, same excuse but this time different with the phone, this time he told me that he can’t give my phone back because in his words he said “well this is gonna be a funny story, but the phone is down the drain, so i can’t give it back to you.” I ask him how the hell did my phone get inside a drain?! And he told me, laughing that he dropped it down the drain and apologized and said he will buy me a new phone. But i already knew then it would be pointless of me to even believe him that he will get me a new phone. Seeing as he hasn’t got the responsibility to pay back the money let alone the phone. In the end i lost in total USD$350. That really did hurt. But nothing i can do about it anymore. From then on i learned my lesson to only lend to people who are close to me and are trustworthy. Yet again i side tracked.
There’s a lot i can say about greed for money, but then again i will have to write a book on it. Haha!
Another factor that people can get greedy of is in love. Some people gets so greedy that they may try and be with more than one partner at one time. And normally because of their greediness of that, they end up losing precious relationships. Sometimes losing some of their loved ones in their family. Others may be greedy in wanting too much in their partner, so therefore they get over controlling and not giving them their own space and freedom. This also ruins relationships, as many do not like or appreciate being controlled and not given their space and freedom. This could be done by for example, the girl calls her boyfriend every half hour or hour making up excuses that she wants to just have a random chat, but in fact her true intentions are to just check up on her boyfriend making sure he isn’t seeing some other girl, or get jealous if he goes and meet his friends that are girls or just want him to spend all his time with her.
In general, I think people get greedy out of habit and it starts off at a young age, because of neglect and their parents don’t teach them and stop them, they get in the habit of being greedy and don’t realise that they are like that until they get told by other people. And trust me it’s embarassing when someone else tells you that you’re greedy and they don’t mean it in a joking kind way.
Greediness habit can be changed if you want to. It’s not a great habit to have in a person. But some people can not help it or change their ways because there isn’t anyone to help them.
Find out about that habit yourself, don’t let other people tell you you’re greedy.
