BoA’s U.S. Debut Song: “Eat You Up”

Submitted by jiamei on Sunday, 14 September 20087 Comments

While patiently waiting for Se7en’s American debut album, I find out that BoA has already chosen a song to debut with in the U.S.!

The song, “Eat You Up” produced by Bloodshy and Avant (whom of which have worked with J.Lo, Britney Spears, Madonna and others) will the BoA’s launching pad into the American music industry.  It’s an upbeat dance track that varies from BoA’s usual Japanese/Korean songs with a heavy American hiphop, trance influence.  BoA’s vocals are quite feminine (maybe too sweet and feminine) in the song in contrast to the aggressive, booming beat but for her it sort of works (for the chorus at least).  Flo-Rida is said to have a part in the remix of “Eat You Up.”

Misha Gabriel and Flii Styliz are the two American choreographers for BoA’s debut song.  So far, they have been very impressed with BoA’s dancing skill, so it’s no doubt that BoA’s image will revolve around her dancing ability.  Misha has worked with Justin Timberlake and Mariah Carey and Flii has worked with artists such as Chris Brown, Michael and Janet Jackson, Beyonce Usher and more.

According to the official BoA America website, her digital single will be released on the 14th of October.

I’ve watched the previews that were released for “Eat You Up” and so far I find the choreography to be amazing.  It really shows off BoA’s major talents and although the her vocals for the song are questionable…I can live with it just because the beat isn’t too bad (although hardly original, and needs more bass), and the chorus is super catchy.  I’m hating the over-sensual image that they’re trying to push onto BoA;  thus the second half of the preview is a better fit for her style and personality.

Earlier this year, the Korean media came out with articles saying that Se7en and BoA are set to debut this spring and THAT hasn’t happened. I had read somewhere on a news blog that BoA was initially set to debut as an actress in an American film…

Se7en’s English album had a tentative release date on the 7th of July but Red Queen Media pulled that release claiming that the album is still being worked on.  Also, I can joyfully and honestly say that Se7en’s English is improving greatly.  The latest on Se7en can be read on his newly updated myspace page, and his facebook profile.

So far, for YG: Se7en has Far*East Movement, Dark Child, and Three 6 Mafia on his debut crew.

For JYP:  Min (wherever the hell she went) has Lil’ John and R.Kelly has G-Soul’s back.  (I’m honestly rooting for J.Lim.)

For ex-JYP:  Bi (Rain) sort of had Omarion…then moved on to acting in Speed Racer.

For SM:  BoA has Bloodshy, Avant, and the amazing choreography of Misha and Flii.

Here is BoA’s English interview.  Throughout the whole press conference, she spoke introduced herself in Korean, and answered questions in Japanese AND English.  I haven’t really been keeping up with BoA’s new stuff, but from that press conference, her English is pretty good so far.  She mentions that she’s a big fan of Michael Jackson and has watched and studied his music videos.  Didn’t Se7en mention that Mike was his idol as well?

The digital single is planned to be released in October with the actual CD single coming out in November.  Her debut album will be coming out early 2009, but as many fans may already know and have experienced, these dates are bound to be rearranged, postponed, pushed back, obliterated, and so on.

Good luck to BoA.  I don’t know how the American media will accept a cute, young-looking Asian girl into the hip-hop scene but I hope that it works out somehow for her.  But seriously SM, give the girl a break.

Bi worked with Omarion, not Fabolous.

MJ is like.. a given idol for most artists since he is a legend.

Best of luck to all of them. They just need to marketed right in order to get the right kind of recognition.

There were potential acts like S.Blush (Korean-American girls) - but CJ Media fell through with that. :|

BoA looks so pretty here! But at the same time, I hate the song. I dislike the beat; it doesn’t move me at all.

Then again, I was always more of a punk-rock fan…

I hope she does well here in the US. It will be interesting (in a good way) to see how far an asian female hip-hop artist can go here.

Her English is amazing, by the way.

I just watched the full release…

I really dislike the US version; they are trying to make BoA look like a slut. The video is really inartistic and there is more of her posing and trying to look hot than dancing. The backgrounds were terribly bland.

The Korean version, on the other hand, was Amazing. Unlike the US version, the focus was on BoA superb dance skills. The video concept was great and I liked how they managed to get the whole dancing-in-the-rain thing by using the fire sprinklers rather than going cliche and have them dance out in a storm. I loved the juxtaposition of the delicate ballet dancer and elegant room with the rougher edge of the hip-hop music and BoA and her backup dancers in baggy street clothes.

And while I initially didn’t like the song, it does grow on you after listening to it a couple of times. Now it’s stuck in my head.
