Special Feature: Wong Fu Productions
Wong Fu Productions is made up of three very talented and creative Asian-American guys who enjoy inspiring others and making them laugh through their videos.
Wong Fu began in 2003 and was exposed to the world by posting independently-made shorts on the wonderful website Youtube and received an explosive response from viewers on videos like the infamous “Yellow Fever”.
Wong Fu Productions became an independent production company with a very large fan base. How large? Their fan base contains millions of fans all over the world. Together the three guys keep their fans happy by working fulltime creating videos, designing shirts and products, working with artists, and other things.
Wong Fu is very connected to their fans and holds many fan meetings and events. The fan meetings are always filled with Wong Fu lovers; the police even had to clear out an area once because there were so many people!
Now, who are the three people that make up Wong Fu? They are Philip Wang, Ted Fu, and Wesley Chan.
Philip Wang is the funny guy of Wong Fu, and also the founder of the group. He is just a regular guy who was raised in the California suburb of Walnut Creek. He says that his childhood mostly consisted of bicycle-riding and cartoon-watching. One day Phil decided to make some lip-sync videos and just continued making videos for fun. Little did he know, his future would consist of making videos. Phil had tried many activities during his years, such as piano, tennis, and dance (Ascension Hip-Hop Group). His high school years flew by and he ended up majoring in Visual Arts at UC San Diego, and there he met Wesley Chan and Ted Fu.
Ted Fu is said to be the main photographer for the group. His childhood consisted of traveling and being exposed to various cultures. He doesn’t really have a location to call a “hometown” due to his family moving everywhere, but he is happy with the experiences he has had in different parts of the world. When he was younger, he became interested in computers and technology thanks to his older brother. He attended UC San Diego to major in Electrical Engineering, but something about it did not satisfy him. Later he taught himself 3D computer animation and uncovered some of his creative side and switched majors to Visual Arts.
Wesley Chan is from Millbrae, CA (a small suburban city in the Bay Area). He does most of the designs for the Wong Fu t-shirts and website. His parents have given him full support throughout his creative journey and he couldn’t be more thankful. He says that he is driven by creative stimulation. He enjoys making things, whether it be filmmaking, animation, photography, or design. He also attended UC San Diego to major in Visual Arts and there met Ted and Phil.
Fun Facts:
- The boys enjoy playing with Nerf toys. Wes has even modified his own Nerf gun to his own personal tastes.
- The ice-cream truck man that goes through their neighborhood parks in front of their house for an agonizing 30 minutes at a time.
- Phil doesn’t really enjoy eating Lean Pockets.
- “Justin Timberlake is awesome.” - Phil
- They shot “Break Up Back Up” at Kt Café.
Wong Fu has done many projects throughout their career. They’ve made numerous shorts, music videos, and even have made a movie!
Wong Fu Productions created their first movie titled “A Moment With You” in October 2005 and finished it in June 2006. It was “the most ambitious and difficult project they’ve undertaken to date”. The movie was not released to the big-screen, so the guys had to promote their film in other ways.
Wes, Ted, and Phil packed their bags and started up a tour for “A Moment With You” and screened their movie internationally at about 40 locations. They’ve even released blogs from each place they’d visited, which you can view on their Youtube channel. You can watch the movie by buying their DVD on the official Wong Fu website.
Wong Fu Productions branched out and created Sketchbook Media, a company mostly centered on business. It is still made up of Phil, Wesley, and Ted. Sketchbook Media has done work with many bands and artists (mostly Asian-American) to help break into the industry. Some of the artists they have worked with are Far*East Movement, Jason Harwell, Thomas’ Apartment, and Magnetic North.
The crew has had many successes during their ambitious journey and has also even made it into some film festivals — national and international. In 2008 their short film “At Musing’s End” became an official selection for the Cannes International Film Festival, along with their short “A Peace of Home”. Also in 2008, their short film titled “The Spare” was a selection for the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.
Although they have received much response from the world, they have stated, “to say we’ve reached success is questionable”.
“If at the end of the day there’s someone out there who has a better day because of us, then we’ve succeeded.”

We leave you with a few quotes from a couple of Wong Fu fans on Asian-Central:
The first video I saw was Yellow Fever. My favorite (short film) would have to be “Just A Nice Guy” or “Two True”. I love two true, because it was heart-warming, and, well, basically, beautiful. The idea of taking pictures with the things on a list seems to be quite an adventure. I love what they did after taking all of those pictures. Just A Nice guy is one of my favorites, because it was quite entertaining. Well, overall, I do not have one big favorite; I love most of their short films.
I absolutely loved it! I love Far East Movement, Hok, and Wong Fu Productions. The dance was entertaining, the song was wonderful, the video effects, the colors, well, basically what I am trying to say is that the video was great. And I love how Ted just randomly pops out of nowhere.
-Cathalina (Bubbletea@asian-central)
When I first watched “Yellow Fever” I couldn’t stop laughing. There were so many comedic and bittersweet aspects of the story that I enjoyed watching and I really thought that it was an amazing short film. Their video for Far East Movement’s “Dance Like MJ” was fun to watch. When I first heard that Wong Fu was working with Far East Movement again, I was so excited! I absolutely love the song, the video fit with the theme of the song perfectly.
I enjoy watching all of Wong Fu’s videos and there isn’t really one that I can say that I favor the most out of the rest. There are parts of every video that I like; even the video blogs where they are just goofing off are entertaining. “Give and Take” is just so funny; their facial expressions are just priceless. Also“THE SPARE” is very sweet and touching. I always learn something new from their videos.
-Brenda (jiamei@asian-central)
I found out about Wong Fu when I stumbled across their infamous “Yellow Fever” video on Youtube. I thought it was hilarious. Then I found out about their website and saw all of the old music videos and stuff, and I instantly became a fan. Phil, Wes, and Ted are such funny and creative guys. I love all of their shorts, but my favorite one is “Just a Nice Guy”, along with “Give and Take”. I thought the Nice Guy short was very true. Girls don’t seem to appreciate the nice guys anymore. I just thought Give and Take was so funny. Regarding their work with FM, I think it is awesome that both groups are working with each other. The “Dance Like Michael Jackson” video is fun to watch, and the song is so catchy.
-Sophia (solong2010@asian-central)
The first time I heard about Wong Fu Productions was through Asian Central. My favorite short is called “Just a Nice Guy”. It shows the struggle that goes on when a guy wants more than a friendship with a girl that he has a romantic interest in.
The Far East Movement’s video of “Dance Like Michael Jackson” is, in my sole opinion, a dance hit. I’m very sure that it will be played at parties and clubs.
-Slacker21@asian-central
When I first found out about Wong Fu Productions was when I was at my friend’s house. She showed me Yellow Fever and it was super funny. Especially at the end when the Indian guy pretended to have an accent and then after he spoke perfectly again. That’s the only short movie from Wong Fu Productions that I watched so Yellow Fever is my favourite right now.
-Julia (Swtangel95@asian-central.com)
“When I first saw WongFu Productions I really liked them and the first one I saw was I think Yellow Fever and that totally got me addicted to their videos. I eventually subscribed to all of their channels because I loved them so much.
My favorite one was probably “Break Up Back Up” because to me that was really cool and well thought and REALLY true. There are a lot of people out there who are afraid of the person they are in a relationship with and some even lose their life over this. You have to be strong and keep yourself happy and safe. Then lastly their newest project with Far East Movement was awesome it was simple but yet really kept my attention. Keep up the awesome job WongFu! Can’t wait to see more!”

Together At Last - Engagement Video - Wong Fu Productions
“Together At Last” is a short film influenced by a couple who survived a long distance relationship for five years. Finally coming “together at last,” Wong Fu Productions made a short film dedicated to them as their engagement video. This video expresses the love of couple whom are good friends with Wong Fu through a creative heart touching adventure. In this short film, the couple had a list to accomplish before meeting again. Taking pictures with everything on the list, they were able to come together in picture and in real life once and for all. This video is a heartwarming, beautiful story is worth watching.
A Peace of Home - Wong Fu Productions
“A Peace of Home” is a creative short film about a girl who moves from the city to the suburbs. In order not to become homesick, she decides to take a part of the city with her. How? Well, that’s the intriguing part, by taking the air and sound of a city into a bottle. The short film was simply, short, simple, and wonderful. No words can really describe the content feeling you get after watching “A Peace of Home.”
Wong Fu will be present at the International Secret Agents Concert in San Gabriel, CA along with Far*East Movement, Quest Dance Crew, and others. The event will take place on September 7 so if you’re nearby, be sure to check it out and support Wes, Ted, and Phil!
