Artist of the Week: Jennifer Chung

Submitted by jiamei on Monday, 25 August 20083 Comments

Jennifer J Chung was born in Korea but grew up in the bay area where she was widely influenced by art through her mother (a dance teacher) and her father (a former recording artist in Korea). Unfortunately, at the age of six her parents divorced and even though her and her brother and mother struggled emotionally and financially, music was something that continued to inspire them.

When Jennifer was nine, she started performing at talent shows and she started really getting noticed when she began posting videos on youtube. It initially started out as something that she wanted to do “just for fun.” Jennifer sings covers from artists like Rachael Yamagata, Sara Bareilles, Tamia and other artists. And she’s even done a cover of Lee Soo Young’s “La La La” entirely in Korean.

Her rendition of Alicia Keys’ “No One” has already soared above 3 million views and she is one of YouTube’s Most Subscribed (All Time) Musicians. In December of 2007, Jennifer was the Grand Prize Winner for Broadwayworld.com’s “GIVE US YOUR VOICE” contest which gave her the opportunity of a lifetime to travel to New York to watch Broadway’s The Little Mermaid as well as meet the cast and composer, Alan Menken.

Jennifer also often collaborates with Johnny Yang to do the instrumental to accompany her voice. The song “I Don’t Know, Let’s Sing” is the most viewed video on her original music youtube account. Jennifer is also learning how to play the guitar and has recorded some of her playing while she sang Rachael Yamagata’s “Worn Me Down.”

Jennifer now attends UC Irvine studying Drama and has even performed in a play for the first time at UCI B.F.E. as Hae-Yoon. She is currently unsigned “but hopes to independently release a demo later this year.”

Writer’s Commentary:

Jennifer has a stunning, soft yet powerful voice. All of her covers are great to watch as well as her original songs. By far, my favorite would have to be “Common, Simple, Beautiful” mainly because her voice just sounds so wonderful. It’s one of those songs that you want to listen to after you’ve gotten back from vacation or whatever and you miss having all the excitement around you. Or at least for me it is.

Her cover of Lee Soo Young’s “La La La” is AMAZING! I was already in love with the original song even before I heard Jennifer sing it. I like her version just as much as the original. Not to mention that her cover of Soulja Boy’s “Crank Dat” actually makes the song sound good.
