Album Review: 2am Vol.1 - “This Song”

On July 11th, the quartet debuted under Cube Entertainment (works with JYP) with their single “This Song.” The boys were originally known for being on Mnet’s “Hot Blood” that featured the musical journey of 11 boys under JYP Entertainment. The members of 2am are Jo Kwon, Im Suelong, Jung JinWoon, and Lee ChangMin. Jo Kwon is probably the most infamous 2am member as he is he member who has gone through the longest trainee period in JYP Entertainment history (7 years).

Track 1 - 이노래

This song seems to ride on the instrumentals and there is no big climax throughout the entire song. I’m just listening to it and waiting for them to take it to the next level but it just doesn’t happen. Once you understand the content of the lyrics, then it song becomes more enjoyable. It took me a couple listens to actually grow into the song, but unfortunately it’s not on the top of my list of things to listen to.

The MV is mostly filled with shots of the boys on their show, working hard, crying etc. Sun Ye from Wonder Girls pops up at the end to comment about the lead singer which sadly takes away focus from the other band members.

Track 2 – 아니라기에 (Recommended)

I believe that this should have been the first single. It’s just more catchy, more memorable and more exciting. I can really hear the clarity and quality of their voices in this song more so than I could from the first track (probably because I quickly lost interest with the other song). In addition, they just sound better singing this song.

Track 3 – 어떡하죠

I keep getting this track and the debut single mixed up, but even I prefer this song over the other one. It’s slightly more exciting, but not by much.

I sort of feel bad for these guys because despite the fact that they have lovely voices, they’ll probably be over-shadowed by the “hot guys” of 2pm. I heard that the two groups are going to merge into one giant super group? I wonder how that will work out. People have made a lot of references about G.O.D. to these guys, but seeing all the other groups they’re going to have to battle with to reach the top…well, we’ll just see what happens.
