OpenDNS: Boost your internet life in less than 5 minutes.
There have been many tutorials on the web and such on how to improve internet speeds from going deep into your browser to just paying your Internet Service Provider more. But today I’ll show you how you can improve your internet performance safely and free with the help of OpenDNS.
Wait what is OpenDNS? OpenDNS is one of the most popular DNS service providers in the world. Wait what? DNS? Now you lost me…. no wait come back, DNS stands for Domain Name System and its basically a system that translates human readable domain names into Internet Protocol Addresses (IP for short, ex: 55.555.555.555). In other words: without DNS, you can’t type www.yahoo.com, www.google.com, or even www.asian-central.com! You’ll have to type in in their primitive IP address form which takes too long to type and remember. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP for short) will automatically assign you a DNS address along with your IP address but for OpenDNS you’ll need to manually change your DNS address to harness its full power.
Ok if my ISP already gave me a DNS address in the first place, why would I need to change it? Simple, unlike the DNS that your ISP provides you, OpenDNS provides more features than you can ever imagine. According to its website, OpenDNS is faster, safer, smarter, and free!
Its faster because of its large cache that stores over hundreds of websites for you to load quickly.
Its safer because not only does it bring speed, but also brings security with its Phishing (pronounce fishing) protection that blocks false websites that lure you into giving away your valuable information (credit cards, SSN, etc) for malicious purposes.
Its smarter because it can fix your typing mistakes for urls such as yahoo.com. When you accidentally type yahoo.cm, OpenDNS will detect and fix it automatically.
Its free because the guys at OpenDNS want it to be free.
Now that you endure all the pain of reading this mess, lets get started on getting OpenDNS:
To get OpenDNS, read the simple tutorial here
You should not have to install any software, register (that’s optional), or pay any fee. All you have to do is input those two DNS addresses into your DNS properties, save, and continue life as it should.
I’ve been using OpenDNS for two years and I consider it to be the fastest, easiest, and safest way to improve internet speeds (second to paying your ISP more of course).
