Death Note Hollywood Remake
Death Note, a manga, has been a huge hit in Japan and many other parts of the world. It became so big that it was made into two Japanese live-action films, an anime series, and even a novel. As many Death Note fans know, there is now going to be an American remake of the manga.
Vertigo Entertainment is developing a remake and Vlas and Charles Parlapanides will be writing the screenplay. Vertigo Entertainment has made many Hollywood remakes of Asian movies, such as The Grudge, The Eye, Shutter, My Sassy Girl, and many others.
If you are not familiar with the story, it is about a teenager who finds a notebook that can put people to death by just writing their name. Many people are upset about this Hollywood remake, since Hollywood remakes seem to ruin the original stories in the Asian films, but many people are also anticipating this movie because they think a story as great as Death Note may have a chance of success. Fans of Death Note are also upset because of the rumor that Zac Efron might be playing the popular character named Light. There is even an online petition of fans begging not to cast Zac Efron in the movie, which I will give the link to at the bottom
In my opinion, I think Hollywood needs to stop remaking Asian movies. The Grudge, The Eye, Shutter, One Missed Call, etc. lost the scary factor in the remakes and it seems to give a wrong impression on how Asian films are to the Americans who don’t watch foreign movies. Maybe Hollywood just shouldn’t remake horror movies, I don’t know. I’ve seen the My Sassy Girl trailer, since the movie isn’t released yet, and it also doesn’t look as good as the Korean original. I haven’t seen or read Death Note myself (yes, crazy, I know), but I’m not sure if this remake will be worth watching or not. Also, what are the directors thinking? Who would cast Zac Efron as a character in this movie?
Maybe Hollywood will surprise us and create the best Death Note movie ever. Who knows? Let’s just wait and see!

They’re also making an American Remake of “Tale of Two Sisters” entitled “The Uninvited.” Of course, they cast two older “hot” chicks to play the sisters just for visual appeal. No doubt that Efron will be casted just to capture the attention of female fans.

While I am not particularly a fan of Hollywood screwing up perfectly good foreign books and films (especially Death Note, since it’s one of my favourite mangas), I am SO on board for Zac Efron as Kira because of - if nothing else - his frightening resemblance to Light Yagami.
(Also, no one but Mamoru Miyano can do the insane laugh correctly, so I’m not even going to hold my breath about that.)

I don’t really see a point in Hollywood making it’s own version of Death Note. Why rip off and destroy a perfectly good story? Hollywood remakes always end up as washed-out imitations of the original versions.
If they wanted to make Death Note “accessible” to a more widespread audience, I think that the movie should just be released in a subtitled version or something. Why lose the authenticity and talented acting of the Japanese actors and actresses?
Anyone hear about the early release of Studio Ghibli’s Nausicaa? It’s was so horribly edited and modified to fit what was assumed to adhere to the American audience’s preferences that it turned out to be nothing like the original. The movie was later re-released by Disney and is presumably identical to the original.

Whoever that person is, give me a break! That’s the lamest excuse ever. Zac Efron can’t do serious acting. It’s not “just acting” that makes one recognizable in front of media, but the kind of roles an actor choses to take on. Heath Ledger was formerly a talented actor who only picked roles that interested him AND played versatile roles something Zac Efron has little experience in.

I can’t help but laugh when people protest Zac Efron based strictly on what he’s done in the HSM series and fears that DeathNote will turn in to a musical. If the movie’s good (it will be better than the Japan version almost by default), anyone who says that they won’t see the film is lying and he’d generate the HUGE interest needed outside the manga niche to get sequel-producing box office returns. The bottom line is that We’ve Only Seen Him In One Role. Who says he couldn’t pull it off? The bottom line is that we don’t know if he can do it or not because we haven’t seen him play anyone besides Troy. Let’s at least be open to the chance that he could pull it off…

Death Note is NOT a horror manga or anime. Nor was the live action movie. This is one of my biggest fears, that they will try to make it a horror film. Another reason Zac Efferon would fail, he could not do horror either. But Death Note is a physiological suspense.
I have read the manga, watched the anime and watched the three movies of Death Note. I am not actually surprised that Hollywood would actually do a remake. I just hope it will not actually kill its brilliance.
Zac Efron as Light. Honestly, I don’t really like the idea. It’s not because he WAS Troy in HMS, but his appeal. He doesn’t have the appeal that Light has. This might even ruin the entire movie. Or maybe not. I don’t know with his acting skills but…I just don’t like the sound of it.
L. L.’s character together with Light is a very difficult and complex character. The actors they should cast must have the versatility and flexibility to do L’s role. (An experienced actor should be recommended.)
My worst nightmare would be:
1.REWRITING most of the story.
2. CASTING incompatible actors.
3. MADE into a horror film.

Even experience actors will have trouble acting as L or Light.
1st they don’t have the same upbringing like japanese people. Japanese language almost sound so poetical, if not melodical. English is a rough.
2nd without a base image imagination has a limited existence.
3rd they can have the outer image of the character they’re playing but they might not have the inner understanding of the character.
4th if the actors are one of those people who watch dubs, I can understand that they don’t necessarily know that their voice is lower than the average japanese society.
5th misa a paris hilton, absolutely not. Misa is an Innocent/pure girl. Her obession for Raito is controlling her. Her… Raito is a smart, sharp eyed boy who fell victim to his own philoshopy of justice and can’t accept it in the end. He wears a mask of…
6th Every movie usually have general theme. Bollywood usually speaks about love. Indonesian usually about betrayal. Japanese has a theme of defense, etc… what does Hollywood have? Some of the really good ones are either comedy or action. The romance are too revolting. If they use CG, either they look real or unreal like Narnia the 1st.
7th there are a lot of bad ones. like “burn after reading” or “hancock” or “twilight” or “harry potter”.

the bottom line is, they can be as passionate about their planning but just like how someone who really loves math but just can’t seem to grasp the concept, there’s not a sure chance that anyone can pull it off with a superficial understanding of DN.

The lame Americans always run out of ideas (of which they didn’t have a lot of to begin with) and then they do remakes of perfectly good movies that don’t need remakes. All the horror movie remakes that came from Vertigo sucked ass, and it would be safe to say that their version of Death Note will also suck. The trailers for the American version of Dragonball sucked so much ass that you wouldn’t even be able to tell its Dragonball if they didn’t say it. I mean honeslty, Goku is supposed to be seven years old with a tail, not a pretty boy high school student, and where is Bulma’s blue hair? When a manga becomes anime, NOTHING CHANGES! Maybe a little addition here and there but in the whole, its authenticity remain the same.
When an anime becomes a Live Action, there ARE a few changes, but they still follow the same plot story and one rarely complains because its STILL just like the anime/manga.
When a live action is to put into film by Japanese, there are SOME changes but the story/character’s personality still obey the ones in the manga/anime/live action.

Apart from the manga, who cares?! The movies and anime and everything are NOTHING but fun complements to the original manga, anyway. I think a HOllywood remake would be awesome..! Casting Efron is just a silly rumore started by people who thought he looked like Light! Duh! The movie script has supposedly been leaked for promotional purposes. When asked if it was real or not, the Warner Brother’s Company simply said “no comment at this time.” Meaning, they are probably rewriting it because all of the fans think it sucks :/ Including me.
Also it is said that Joseph Gordon Levitt was asked to play a role, we don’t no which role or if he even agreed to doing it, but we know he was asked. I looked his picture up on google (because I didn’t know who he was) and my reaction was “ew.”
They totally screwed the story if that leaked script was in fact real. They gave the characters english names, except for Watari and L, which, quite frankly, doesn’t make since. What also doesn’t make since is that they said the first movie would be based on the first three volumes, but the script had an entirely different plot and finished in one movie. The script was probably just a shot in a dark to see what people would think about a new idea.
When it comes in theaters (sometime in the fall of 2010) I won’t watch it if they use that “leaked” script or if the trailer sucks. I didn’t like any of the japanese movies (except for L: Change the world) and I doubt I’ll like this one.
death note is a nice movie, i loved it… i really appreciate that anime movie,the concept,idea and philosophy. if ever they make a death note movie on Hollywood, i will watch it…
